Hong Kong style restaurant selling char xiew, roasted duck and dishes.  The shop is next to the famous (over rated) Casuarina roti prata.  Tried the beef noodles (牛腩面)。  Not bad – tender with decent good sauce.  Added the wonton – failed big time.  Awful !  Noodles also so so only.

This wonton mee stall always form a long queue at Teck Ghee hawker centre (ang mo kio ave 10).  Normally, I will patronize either the mee pok stall or the mee rembus stall at this HC but was curious why there is always a long queue at this wonton mee stall which is consuming and unheard of.    It is my interest to discover gem where most other popular food blogger has not found yet.  Wow, the noodle is surprisingly good !  Springy texture and well cook.  The noodles they order is of good quality (more eggs) that make the noodles with very good texture.  Credit goes to the uncle who put his heart and soul to cook a good wonton noodles (these days hard to find good one).  The ingredient (char siew, wonton) and the soup are ok, fine only.  Queue is long but moving quite fast.  Aunty collecting the orders is very friendly despite the long queue.

They have moved from the coffee shop (next door) to this new hawker centre.  It is vary famous among the katong people.  I find it so so !  The noodles is ok – quite QQ but the chili is the let down.  Char Siew also too much lean meat and tasteless.  The wonton and shrimp dumpling are ok but not spectacular.  Only good thing is that you do not need to queue for a long time.  Inddeed, the roti coffess stall near the stall has super queue (for rotu kaya)!

I learnt about this stall from  the food review by a newspaper article.  Never really put in the effort to try the stall till one Sunday morning sending my kid to the tuition at Kovan and remembered about this stall and give it a try.  I like the coffee shop here because there are plenty of “illegal” parking lot in front and if ” matah” come – just run quickly to move the car away !

IMG_9214

Ok, back to the review of the noodles.  The liow (ingredient) is quite generous.  For $3 – get the boil wonton and the fried wonton with quite a few slices of the char siew.  For a good wonton mee – as I keep repeating myself – the combination of QQ noodles, good chili, tasty wonton, good char siew and the cooking of the noodles are paramount important.  Unfortunately Bee Kee only pass one check box – the char siew.  The rest are edible but it is not a stall (like the one at Cheng Seng Tekka or Tanjong Katong Eng noodles) that you will be craving for.

Old school type wonton noodles.  Char Siew (bit too lean) and wonton pretty alright.  Noodles are tardy and mixing not enough eggs.  Chili is nothing spectacular.  Overall it is quite disappointing despite having to queue for a while.

Wonton Noodle (Tiong Bahru Market) 忠于原味云吞面

Ever since the famous wonton noodle Hua Feng 华丰面家 closed in Tiong Bahru Market, I thought there will not have another good wonton noodle in the food centre until I tried this no stall name but called themselves “Zhong Yi Yuan Wei” – literally translated as loyal to the original favor – wonton noodle stall.  It is just next to the famous Koh’s brothers ter huang kiam chye stall.

IMG_7120

Prepare to wait for 20 – 30 minutes as the queue is as long as when we were waiting for Hua Feng wonton noodle before.

IMG_7121

The char siew is made by the owner and he used (mix with other part of the pork) “bu jian tian” (不見天) part – ie near the armpit of the pig where ” the area don’t see the sky”.  This is the part where it produce the best char siew as it requires some fat to ensure the char siew is not too lean to make it too dry and hard.  This part is costly though so do not expect to be served 100% from the armpit.

IMG_7122

I ordered the shrimp dumpling and the wonton and the dumpling is nothing special (typical Singapore style – can taste little of the shrimp only).

IMG_7125

The bu qian tian part of the char siew is quite nice.  Unfortunately (I believe sue to the cost) – the boss gave only one miserable piece from this part and the rest are from the normal part – which is very hard and dried.

IMG_7127

IMG_7128

The best part of this stall is the noodle which is springy and good favors due to the boss using high quality full egg noodle.  My advice is not adding any chili and just taste the original favor of the noodle (and that is why the boss named his stall for).  Overall, I am quite like this stall and will go back again and this time I will ask the boss to just give me the armpits (not his but the char siew!).

Located at Bukit Merah View Hawker Centre, the stall sell quite a few types of noodles (Wonton, Shui Kaw Shrimp dumpling, Beef Brisket, braised chicken feet, spinach made noodles etc).

IMG_6452

I saw a customer ordered the wonton mee and the owner added a lot of gravy on the noodles.  So I decided to go for plain without adding the gravy as I want to try the texture of the noodles as I was told the noodle is made by the owner.  Adding the gravy will made the noodles too soggy and could not taste the springiness of the noodles.

IMG_6453

$3 a plate comes with generous portion of char siew and a lot of vegetable.  I skip the fried wonton and the owner give me one shui kaw.

IMG_6454

My overall experience for this stall is disappointment.  Char siew is plain.  Soup is plain.  Wonton and shui kaw are ordinary.  The chili is so diluted and tasteless.  The only + point is the noodle which is springy but because I did not ask for the special made gravy, the owner does not how to add the oil + soy sauce + sesame oil which make the noodles so bland.  I will not recommend this stall.

Alishan Taiwan Beef Stew / Tendon Noodle

Alishan Taiwan Beef  Stew / Tendon Noodle

I have passed by the stall for so many times that I have never step into the restaurant before until one afternoon where I wanted to eat at the nearby coffee shop fish soup that was already closed.  I did not try this stall as I am not a beef fan especially Taiwanese style beef noodles where I find the noodles is not as good as the HK style and the beef normally is not as tender as the HK style.

IMG_5452

Surprisingly the menu comes with 2 types of beef noodles.  Beside Taiwanese style beef noodles, they also offer HK style gauo lam mee (stew beef and tendon noodles).  The noodle is the typical Wonton mee style.  I like the stew beef very much.  I ordered both beef meat and tendon and was rich, flavorful and tender.

Also order side dish – fried shrimp dumpling.  So so only, they have over fried the dumpling and it becomes very dry.

IMG_5451

The beef soup is pretty decent too.

The hawkers stalls at the Hainanese Village Centre, Blk 105 Hougang Ave 1  are very 旺 (prosperus).   There are so many patrons that you could hardly find seats at the HC.  There are so many stalls that you see long queues (2 teochew meepok, wonton mee, carrot sticks, nasir lemak, prawn noodles etc).  The feng shui here is really good !!

IMG_5333

This wonton noodles is very authentic Cantonese style.  The noodles is with reasonably good quality mix with good quantity of eggs.  Not much of alkaline (kee smell) .  The uncle will run the noodle with cold water to make it springy.  This is very traditional way of cooking noodles which many of the new generation owners do not practice any more to save time.

IMG_5334

I just wonder why so many of the wonton stalls that can get the wonton right! can get the chili right ! Can get the noodles right! – but always fail in the Char Siew.  This stall is no exception.  The Char Siew is too dry and tasteless.

IMG_5335

Chili sauce is ok – not too bad.

IMG_5337

We order the SPECIAL meal which include wonton and shrimp dumpling (swee qiao).  Both the wonton and dumpling are good.

IMG_5340

IMG_5339

We also order the braised chicken feet.  Not spectacular.  Passable.

SOI 19 THAI WANTON MEE

SOI 19 THAI WANTON MEE

Soi 19 Woton Mee is using the wonton mee concept from Thailand.  The owner is a Singaporean though.

IMG_5052

The queue is extremely long especially on the weekends so you got to be very patient to queue for the delicious noodles.

IMG_5054

In Bangkok, I love to eat at Soi 38 Sukumvit Road.  They serve with no chili sauce but only nice noodles mixed with fish sauce, lard and add the wonton, char siew and crab meat.  Over here is quite similar except that there is no crab meat – which I believe is the costs issue.

IMG_5056

The owner has certainly spent sometime to choose the right texture of noodles which is the most important part of this dish. With the fantistice texture with a lot of eggs, it has already won half of the battle.

IMG_5087

The owner also fried the wonton – which you seldom find this in Thailand.  The owner also offer green chili which I think must be upon  the request of the local customers (die die must have chili).

IMG_5057

I find that the taste of the soup can be improved though.

IMG_5088

Very authentic offering of sugar, fish sauce, lard, chilli powder, fresh garlic – if you wish to add to the already very flavorful noodles.

IMG_5055     IMG_5089

The owner bought a lot of &0s bowls (those with rooster pictures) and the phone is made of steel (which is very Thai).  They sell 3 sizes Regular $3.5, Medium 4 and large 5.  I suggest you don’t tyry the large size which is really large.  Medium will be ok for guys and lady should stick to the regular.

Overall, this is my favorite wonton mee stall that I frequent quite regularly (normally I go there on the weekdays) whenever I miss my SOI 38 wontoon noodles.
