Traditional Famous Prawn Mee

Traditional Famous Prawn Mee

Forever you find a long queue for Lor Mee and Prawn Mee at this stall.  The uncle cooking the noodle works like tortoise pace.  I guessed he enjoys seeing a long queue at his stall.  Some of the stall owners are really sick (eg the beef noodles at East Coast Lagoon) and sometime I wonder why they cannot be faster as there are many customers like me hate to queue no matter how good the food is.  Uncle, stop looking at the queue, you are losing a lot of business.  Queue dnt make you rich, serve faster and looking at the $$$ better than looking at the long queue.

So I decided to patronize the stall one day hopefully there is absolutely no queue.  I chose one day to wake up at 6 am and was at the coffee shop at 615 am.  NO queue heng ah (I thought) , only 2 customers in front of me.  You guess what! the uncle refused to cook; he went to the back of the stall and washed his cooking ware, washed the floor and just refused to cook.  He looked at the queue again and when there were 4 guys behind me, he returned and started cooking @#$%$#@ (sorry, very angry!!)

NO COMMENT on the food :  until the uncle changes his attitude and stop looking at the queue !!  (BTW : the uncle is not that old yeah!  probably in his early 50s).

Teo Heng Teochew Porridge Stall

Arguably the best teochew porridge in Singapore!  The stall is started by an old uncle Mr Liew who is now near 90 and has been dishing out towchew muay for more than 60 years.  The stall is now mainly operated by the 2nd generation and the “young man” is extremely friendly (I started patronizing this stall since 1988 and the “young man” is now as old as me!)

The kiam Chye is not Kiam and is more the sweet type – very yummy.  Over here, you don’t get the traditional steam fish.  Instead they “boil” the fish and serve you fresh with the topping of kiam chye.  Braised duck and braised pork belly are very good too as the LOR is very teochew traditional style and you hardly get such good LOR from the ordinary so called teochew porridge stall.

There are many favourite dishes notable the braised egg (which is 70% cooked – a bit like Japanese Ramen style).

The meatball (fishcake) is very soft too.

The taupok stuffed with filing is very unique to this stall too.

IMG_3927This famous Bak Chor Mee stall at Hong Lim Food Centre is operated by the old uncle owner.  The old uncle must be in his 70s now.  The stall first started on the open roadside stall in front of the “Tong Chi Medical Hall” (opposite Hong Lim Park).

The noodles tossed with black vinegar and topped with stewed shitake mushrooms, deep fried lard, fresh pork slices and teochew dumplings.

The owner gives quite generous dried fried fish (tee poh) which mix very well with the chili and vinegar.  The dumpling in teochew style is very good too.  If you are not a vinegar fan, you should tell the uncle to put less as this version of bacho mee has very strong vinegar taste.
