This is the coffee shop at the junction of Jalan Imbi and Jalan Barat.  Every morning, you will see a big crowd enjoying the local hawker food in this coffee shop (both local and Singapore tourists).

Lorong Ah Lor Hokkien Mee

Lorong Ah Lor Hokkien Mee

This is the first stall before you turn into the food alley (it is next to the Rong Ji  龙記barbecue pork).

IMG_3786

The fire is so strong that only with this level of fire you can have the wok hei.

IMG_3784

The Hokkien Mee is very oily as the amount of lard added to the noodles is no joke.  No hawker in Singapore dare to do it as you will definitely get a summon from HSA or NEA, haha.  Every mouth of noodles comes with big churn of lar po.  I supposed that makes the difference between KL Hokkien mee and Singapore char kway tiow.  (KL 1 : Spore 0 – in terms of amount of lar po).

IMG_3783

The balanchan chili is very good to go with the Hokkien Mee.

IMG_3785

The fried loh shi fun is very good too.  The texture of the LSF is very smooth.  With the lard and the la por and the wok hei, it is another die die must try dish (watch your heart though !)

IMG_3788

IMG_3789

Remember to asked for the price first as 6 of us with 3 plates of noodles the uncle (look like 2nd hand car saleman) charged us RM80.  I am sure if we would to speak with KL accent (联邦华語), it will only cost RM50.

IMG_3763

This is one of the best Xio Bak you can get in Spore/Msia.    The stall open at 12.30 sharp.  By the time, you can already see a long queue of customers waiting patiently for their food to be served. Actually I am quite amazing the KL people are very patient when it comes about waiting for food as compared with WE Singaporean.  Good food of course have to wait, right!

The shifu will cut away the lean part leaving only the first 3/4 of the meat – which I believe is the best part (of course the most sinful) of the xio bak.  I wonder what will they be doing with the cast away lean part ?!?

1 Kg = RM96.  Not cheap, nut really worth the money, time waiting, and the trip to the coffee shop.

Foong Foong Ang Pang Yong Tau Foo

Foong Foong Ang Pang Yong Tau Foo

IMG_3753

This is the best ang pang yong tau foo you can get in KL.  There is another stall next to Foong Foong but the you can always see a big crowd at Foong Foong.

There are no noodles or rice to go with the YTF.  Your ordered by number of pieces for dried or normal soup style.  Dried version basically are fried sui kow and fried bean curd skin.  Both are extremely good with excellent filling.

IMG_3749

The soup version (not a lot of soup) comes with tau foo, egg plant, lady finger, bitter gourd, fishball and chilli stuffed with fish paste.  The tau foo is very good, smooth texture.

IMG_3751

Avoid going during lunch time.  Very crowded.

Ah Hwee Prawn Mee (Fook Hai)

Ah Hwee Prawn Mee (Fook Hai)

IMG_3896

I have not been to Fook Hai Hawker Centre for a long while.  I used to frequent the food centre and many of the stalls no longer exist.  2nd floor Hakka Yong Tau Foo, ground floor traditional Cantonese Wonton noodles, just to name a few.

Fook Hai was made famous by 2 prawn mee stalls when in the 80s when they moved from opposite Hong Kong Street road side to this food centre, their prawn noodles were so popular that you will see the queue non stop.  I remembered they are the first stall to start adding chili powder to the soup.  They are also among the pioneer who sell giant big prawn that charging $10 per bowl – which makes a lot of news (negative though) during the time where one bowl of noodles is till selling at $1.20 or $1.50.

IMG_3898

My recent visit only see one of the 2 survived.  I decided to give Ah Hwee a try.  Disappointed.  Very disappointed.  Though the prawn is fresh and nice, the soup is extremely blend to the extent that I (which I seldom do) need to add soy sauce to the soup.

IMG_3882

We ordered the yam ring, which is quite good.

IMG_3886

like their omelet, which is very crispy outside but soft inside (we ordered both silver fish and shrimp omelet).  Not easy to cook well and the control of fire is very important.

IMG_3889

IMG_3893

We also ordered the claypot fish fillet.  The gravy goes well with rice and they have given quite a fair amount of yummy yam.

IMG_3891

IMG_3892

You should try to their cold crabs, goh heong, steamed pomfret and oyster omelet (Or Chian) which are their specialty .

Yam Paste (oh nee) must order too but remember to order earlier as they need time to prepare.

You can ask for lean part of the fatty belly pork.  Certainly the later taste better but of course you need to burn more calories after the meal 🙂

IMG_3716

None of the Singapore char siew stall can match this KL stall.

2 stripes cost about RM29.  Not particular cheap comparing to Singapore char siew, but certainly worth it.

The owner uncle is very friendly and very patient attending to your requests.

IMG_3717

Try their roasted duck too, very juicy.

Tian Wai Tian Fishhead Steamboat (Ang Mo Kio)

Tian Wai Tian Fishhead Steamboat (Ang Mo Kio)

I am not sure whether they are related to the outlet at Serangoon Road (original).  What I know is this stall has leijie (troublesome) to get parking lot, find a seat and cleaner environment. The standard is as good as the one at Serangoon.  So there is no reason I do not bring my family here for my favourite food.

We order the medium size pomfret steamboat – fish slice are very generous with many very yummy yam.  Soup base is very nice and cooked for many hours.

IMG_3597

Our favourite dish is the salted egg spare ribs.  Strongly recommended.

IMG_3598

The kang kong is very nice too, not over cook and the balanchan chili is marvelous.

The  steamed yam cake is very tasty and extremely soft, traditional Cantonese cake.  The sweet sauce and chili are so nice to go with the Cheong Fun and yam cake.  We also ordered the green bean dumpling – excellent !

The fried noodles and meehoon are ok, nothing special.

3 plates costs $6.
