SOI 19 THAI WANTON MEE

SOI 19 THAI WANTON MEE

IMG_5053

Soi 19 Woton Mee is using the wonton mee concept from Thailand.  The owner is a Singaporean though.

IMG_5052

The queue is extremely long especially on the weekends so you got to be very patient to queue for the delicious noodles.

IMG_5054

In Bangkok, I love to eat at Soi 38 Sukumvit Road.  They serve with no chili sauce but only nice noodles mixed with fish sauce, lard and add the wonton, char siew and crab meat.  Over here is quite similar except that there is no crab meat – which I believe is the costs issue.

IMG_5056

The owner has certainly spent sometime to choose the right texture of noodles which is the most important part of this dish. With the fantistice texture with a lot of eggs, it has already won half of the battle.

IMG_5087

The owner also fried the wonton – which you seldom find this in Thailand.  The owner also offer green chili which I think must be upon  the request of the local customers (die die must have chili).

IMG_5057

I find that the taste of the soup can be improved though.

IMG_5088

Very authentic offering of sugar, fish sauce, lard, chilli powder, fresh garlic – if you wish to add to the already very flavorful noodles.

IMG_5055     IMG_5089

The owner bought a lot of &0s bowls (those with rooster pictures) and the phone is made of steel (which is very Thai).  They sell 3 sizes Regular $3.5, Medium 4 and large 5.  I suggest you don’t tyry the large size which is really large.  Medium will be ok for guys and lady should stick to the regular.

Overall, this is my favorite wonton mee stall that I frequent quite regularly (normally I go there on the weekdays) whenever I miss my SOI 38 wontoon noodles.

This Sze Char Stall is at  Blk 202 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3.  The stall is packed on the weekends but they serve quite fast and normally has no difficulty to get a table.

IMG_5216

The stall won many food review awards and was featured in the TV program before.

IMG_5214

Black current ribs is one of their signature dish…

IMG_5220

You shall not miss to order their pumpkin sauce prawn which is another signature dish.  Highly recommended.

IMG_5222

The fishhead curry and their braised taufu are very good too.  We ordered pork floss with eggplant..not bad; not too oily.

IMG_5221

One of the dishes I like very much is their Hor Fun which have the wok hei….

This Malays food stall is famous for its Mee Rebus which is unique as the owner add the satay sauce on top of the noodles.  It used to be at the coffeeshop next to Kovan (the 亚城 teochew porridge).  They have won many food review awards – see below.

IMG_5255

IMG_5256

The owner is a nice guy.  But when we do food review, we cannot be bias and not objective in our comment.  I will say that though adding the satay sauce is a unique recipe, I still think that satay sauce has made the noodles too sweet and overwhelming.  Good mee rebus will be coming from the gravy and frankly you cant taste much for this stall due to the satay sauce.  They are so many other good mee rebus stalls that do not required such gimmick – try that few stalls at Adams Road or Geylang – more authentic and back to basic.

IMG_5257

IMG_5258

The other unique recipe is that for $1.50 – $2, you can add additional shredded chicken to your mee rebus.  Again, I still think that it will be best to stick to the basic – Noodles, Gravy, Green Chili, Fried Shallot, Lime, (and may be begedil) – sedap!!

[The stall also sells satay and mee soto]

This wonton mee stall in Ang Mo Kio is a typical example of everything is bad – but the queue is superb long.  The stall is next to the famous 喜相逢 yong tau foo which forever form a long queue (and frankly it  is one of the best Yong Tau Foo in Singapore)

IMG_5240

As for this wonton mee, the noodles, chili, wonton, char siew are all sub-standard (I will rate them 2/10).  However, the queue is non stop like the YTF stall.  Strange thing really happen and sometime I must say you cannot don’t believe in Fengshui.  First one of all, the noodles are not eggy enough (must be ordering the lower grade).  You can taste a lot of KEE smell.  The charsiew is made by the owner – but it is so lean, dry and bland.  The wonton filing is so stingy and tasteless just like the soup.  Chili is nothing good to even worth mentioning.

IMG_5241

IMG_5242

IMG_5243

Sometime, I will give the owner another chance and may be the wonton is very normal but may have some other nice side dishes.  So I ordered the braised chicken feet.  I only took one piece and returned the balance to the owner.  PLEASE do not order – it is worst ever chicken feet I ever tried in my life !!!  Taste like rubber.

Overall experience – BAD BAD BAD.  Speechless!

Tip Top Curry Puff

Tip Top Curry Puff

IMG_5260

This is the Chinese style curry puff.  The filing is well balance with egg, potatoes and chicken mixed with the curry spices that make one of the best curry puffs in Singapore.  The texture of the skin is just nice and crispy.  I find that the curry puff here is so much better than the over rated Old Chang Kee.

IMG_5261

Every time passing by the stall at Ang Mo Kio, just have to buy a few for my family who are all craving for curry puff .

The Roti Prata stall is at the famous Sze Char – Two Chefs at Sin Ming Estate.  This roti prata is one of the best in Singapore.  It is a good as the one in Sin Ming too – Blk 24 Sin Ming Road (Jin Fa Kopitiam).

IMG_4633

I prefer to order gosong (no filing) roti prata as you can then taste the texture of the prata.  This stall make the gosong prata with crispy exterior but fluffy and  chewy inside.  It has the buttery sweet fragrance from the dough.  A good prata always depending on the 2 very important steps – making of the dough and leave it overnioght and then the flipping of the dough before cooking.  Both steps required very skillful cook to complete.  Many times, you get the dough made by machines from the Central Kitchen.  This stall is certainly hand-made them.

IMG_4626

IMG_4628

The only weakness as compared to Blk 24 is their curry sauce which is too oily.

The noodles texture is very nice and it has a lot of egg, specially made for this wonton stall.  You can add chili or dark soy sauce (KL style) or simply without any sauce.  The noodle texture is so good that you can eat it plain (with oil and soy sauce).  The char siew is very bland though and the wonton is nothing spectacular too.

Yong Seng Teochew Fishball Noodle

IMG_4810

Yong Seng Mee Pok stall is located at the Hainanese Village Centre, Blk 105 Hougang Ave 1.  When we visited the hawker centre on a Saturday, my god, there are queues almost in every stall.  No wonder you can never get a car park nearby.  I recommend you park at the HDB open carpark opposite the hawker centre.  Take a few minutes walk – at least you can get a car park lot easily.

IMG_4811

As usual, I can’t resist to try the mee pok.  I find that the ingredient (fishball, meatball, mushroom, fishcake, minced pork, he kiow) are quite good and generous.  The noodle texture is quite well done too.  However, I somehow find that there is something lacking in the sauce – the chili is not spicy hot enough and they can be more generous in the vinegar.  Also mee pok without teepo (fried dried fish) will just make the meepok not too authentic and da siok !

IMG_4813

IMG_4814

The saving grace is the soup which is extremely tasty and you don’t get too much of the MSG (hope they don’t add any!) and you can tell that they have boill the soup in long hours with the pork big bone and other liow.  I will go for kway tiow soup instead in my next visit.

A very old shop unit at the junction of Yio Chu Kang Road and Serangoon Road.  There are only about 4 tables at the corridor of the unit.  The stall is manned by 3 very senior Malay chefs, one of who is an old lady who is still very strong, active and healthy.

IMG_4840

The nasi lemak rice is my favorite.  The rice cook with very well blend coconut milk and is extremely fragrant.  The chicken wings and the drum sticks are well marinated and deep fried till very crispy.  The chili is very good too and I will recommend you add the sayu lodeh gravy to mix with the rice and chili.  SIOK !
