This stall is started by a PHD turns hawker.  There is a lot of publicity about the owner on how he used scientist way to cook the food.  At the end, no matter how you process the cook or focusing on PR angle, it is the final product that is important.  Otherwise it just becomes another “food court” type of food (nothing special and no character).   I just find that the char siew, noodles are very ordinary.  Nothing to shout about and it is not a stall that will make you keep thinking of coming back.

Da Ji Chicken Rice (Toa Payoh)

Da Ji Chicken Rice (Toa Payoh)

I went to Lor 5 Toa Payoh hawker centre to eat the fishball.  I saw a long queue waiting at this stall and curious people queing must be something good.  When I went near the stall, I saw the price and that explained why the queue was formed : chicken rice at $2 / plate is not easy to find these days.

I decided to give it a miss as from the look of the stall, the roasted chicken does not looks that interesting.  Then I saw a lady bought a plate of fried chicken wings which I believed is like 8 pieces.  The smell of the chicken wing was so nice that I could not resist and bought some home.

Wow, this must be one of the best fried chicken wings I ever have.  Crispy outside (not sure what type of secret flour they used/ mixed) and juicy inside which you can taste a good mix of ingredients / herbs.  If you like, fried chicken wings – don’t miss this stall.  Worth the wait (the uncle chopping the chicken has the slow motion like the MATRIX movie…extremely slow…don’t how he trained to be able to chop the chicken with such a tortoise speed).

Best Epok Epok (Curry Puff) you can get in Singapore.  The sardines puff is better than the potato type.  They made in small piece and very easy to eat.  Very crispy and the ingredient used is very fresh and tasty.  Each costs S$0.60.

They also sell Nasi Lemak.  The rice is well mixed with the coconut milk.  The chicken wings are full of ginger and other ingredient.  The chili is very nice and tasty.

This char kway tiow stall must be top 5 char kway tiow you can get from Spore.  Top of my list is still Hill Street CKY at bedok hawker centre.

IMG_4177

The texture is smooth and the dark sweet sauce and the wetness of the noodles is just about right.

IMG_4181

Very generous of hum (cockles) and lak cheong.

Sin Hoe Hin Wanton Noodles

Sin Hoe Hin Wanton Noodles

Sin Hoe Hin  Wonton Noodles was formerly from Rowell Road.  The wonton mee is very KL style with  dark sauce style.  It has now relocated to  the coffee shop at the junction of Simon Road/Upper Serangoon.

Mixing the wonton noodles with the dark sauce and chili sauce.  Unfortunately, the noodles texture is soggy and the skill of cooking the noodles is pretty bad.

IMG_4118

The consolation is the shrimp dumpling soup.  They give very generous portion of the dumpling and the ingredient and the water chestnut they used to mixed with the meat and the shrimp is quite good.  Overall, it is quite a disappointment as I always look for good egg noodles to start with, and the cooking of the noodles by the employees who seems to have no passion whatsoever can never be the same as the old day where it was cooked by the towkay at Rowell Road
