Teo Heng Teochew Porridge Stall

Teo Heng Teochew Porridge Stall

Arguably the best teochew porridge in Singapore!  The stall is started by an old uncle Mr Liew who is now near 90 and has been dishing out towchew muay for more than 60 years.  The stall is now mainly operated by the 2nd generation and the “young man” is extremely friendly (I started patronizing this stall since 1988 and the “young man” is now as old as me!)

The kiam Chye is not Kiam and is more the sweet type – very yummy.  Over here, you don’t get the traditional steam fish.  Instead they “boil” the fish and serve you fresh with the topping of kiam chye.  Braised duck and braised pork belly are very good too as the LOR is very teochew traditional style and you hardly get such good LOR from the ordinary so called teochew porridge stall.

There are many favourite dishes notable the braised egg (which is 70% cooked – a bit like Japanese Ramen style).

The meatball (fishcake) is very soft too.

The taupok stuffed with filing is very unique to this stall too.

I am a Teochew and I love to eat Teochew muay.  I remembered when I was young, my uncle will bring me to Jurong port at 3 a.m. to have the porridge.  Or in the early morning to have the teochew muay at the Boat Quay.  I also remembered a very good teochew muay stall in the Killiney Road wet market (now where SIngtel is located).  At Mosque street, there was a stall called 两兴。Of one the best in town but ceased business 10 years ago.  These are all very authentic teochew muay which cook very good braised duck and belly pork (三层肉).  They made very good meat ball too (肉丸)。  Due to lack of scuccesors, most of the stall owners ceased business.

So when I see the queue at this stall and ordered some of the dishes, I really like (捡到宝) found fortune.  The braised belly pork is so good and the kiam chye is one of the best you can have.  I saw the meat ball too (肉丸)unfortunately the uncle in front of me ordered all for himself (the last 10 pieces).

The owners are chatty and very friendly.  This is one of the few stalls that will not collect money from you until you finished your meal.
