The stall is manned by an old uncle and a young lady – supposed to be his daughter.  The stall was very famous in the early day at Balestier street and subsequently moved to Whampoa and now at Tekka market.

I wanted to order the soup version but seeing most of the customers in front of me ordered the dry version and decided to give it a try.  I order Mee mixed with kway tiow (since no sign or mee gia or mee pok) and the aunty stared at me and like I am an alien.  Yes they only have mee and thin bee hoon.  2 types only.  Ok – I told her bee hoon mee (but I know it it not going to be nice as bee hoon in dry version always a let down).

The prawns slices are very generous and the old uncle using very good quality prawn and credit go to them on the ingredient.  Other than the big chunk of prawns and the generous fried shallot – the rest are quite a disappointment.  The chili is bland and not much taste.  The soup is even bland and not much of a prawn taste.  3.5 / 10

The super long queue attracted me to try this stall.  Ordered both soup and dried mee kia.  Disappointed with the soup as the soup is the most important thing for a good prawn noodles.  The taste is rather bland and only taste is very salty.  The mee kia passable.  Chilies are ok but nothing great to shout about.  Overall quite disappointed to queue for such a long time but the quality of the food does not measure up.  This hawker centre is very unique.  Almost 60% of the stall you need to queue for the food.  But 60% of the time you are disappointed with the standard of the food.

Sunday morning, went to Lor 8 Toa Payoh to have breakfast with my wife.  Walk a few rounds and uncertain which stall to try as not very familiar with this hawker centre.

IMG_6334

Saw a long queue at this stall at #01-40 and would trust the Toa Payoh residents’ taste will not be too bad to queue at this prawn noodles stall (most other stall are without queue).  No accreditation display on the stall – so I taught WOW ! finally I found a good prawn noodle stall that has not been picked up by the food critics.

WOW – see pei pai jiat ( taste real bad !).  No wonder there is no one write about this stall.  The noodle is soggy.  Chili is so bland and tasteless.  The worst is that the owner seems to love to see a long queue that he is trying so hard to slow down in prepping the food.  Sorry lah, Toa Payoh residents!  I really not sure why you guys want to queue up for this prawn noodle stall !  Speechless !

IMG_6337

The soup is pathetic.  One of the worst you can get !

IMG_6336

Moral of the story – queue not necessary good!

Tian Tian Fa Carrot Cake

The consolation is while waiting for the prawn noodle, getting a bit of impatient and ordered a carrot cake from the stall opposite (#01-42).  Not bad !  Crispy outside, the kway is quite soft.  Not too oily and not too salty.

When I was there on a weekend, the queue was pretty long and I told myself may be is a jewel hiding in the heartland that I was about to discover.

IMG_5301

Sorry, soup too bland.  To be qualified as good Prawn noodles, first thing first is about the soup.  When it is too bland and tasteless, the rest of the comments are irrelevant.  Mission failed.  Queue is misleading, sori stall owner – you really need to improve on your stock.

Forever you find a long queue for Lor Mee and Prawn Mee at this stall.  The uncle cooking the noodle works like tortoise pace.  I guessed he enjoys seeing a long queue at his stall.  Some of the stall owners are really sick (eg the beef noodles at East Coast Lagoon) and sometime I wonder why they cannot be faster as there are many customers like me hate to queue no matter how good the food is.  Uncle, stop looking at the queue, you are losing a lot of business.  Queue dnt make you rich, serve faster and looking at the $$$ better than looking at the long queue.

IMG_3973

So I decided to patronize the stall one day hopefully there is absolutely no queue.  I chose one day to wake up at 6 am and was at the coffee shop at 615 am.  NO queue heng ah (I thought) , only 2 customers in front of me.  You guess what! the uncle refused to cook; he went to the back of the stall and washed his cooking ware, washed the floor and just refused to cook.  He looked at the queue again and when there were 4 guys behind me, he returned and started cooking @#$%$#@ (sorry, very angry!!)

NO COMMENT on the food :  until the uncle changes his attitude and stop looking at the queue !!  (BTW : the uncle is not that old yeah!  probably in his early 50s).

I have not been to Fook Hai Hawker Centre for a long while.  I used to frequent the food centre and many of the stalls no longer exist.  2nd floor Hakka Yong Tau Foo, ground floor traditional Cantonese Wonton noodles, just to name a few.

Fook Hai was made famous by 2 prawn mee stalls when in the 80s when they moved from opposite Hong Kong Street road side to this food centre, their prawn noodles were so popular that you will see the queue non stop.  I remembered they are the first stall to start adding chili powder to the soup.  They are also among the pioneer who sell giant big prawn that charging $10 per bowl – which makes a lot of news (negative though) during the time where one bowl of noodles is till selling at $1.20 or $1.50.

IMG_3898

My recent visit only see one of the 2 survived.  I decided to give Ah Hwee a try.  Disappointed.  Very disappointed.  Though the prawn is fresh and nice, the soup is extremely blend to the extent that I (which I seldom do) need to add soy sauce to the soup.

The stall is operated by 2 old couple.  The old uncle is extremely slow and he does everything by himself, cooking the noodles and washing the dish at the same time.  FOr one single bowl of soup noodle, he will take at least 4 minutes to complete.  You need to be very very patient to queue up and wait for your noodle to be cooked.

As a result of his “multi task”, my noodle in soup was overly cooked for a mile and becomes very soggy.  However, my wife ordered the dried mee gia, it is excellent.  I think I forgive him for being so inefficient in exchange for the very good mee gia 🙂  Chili is excellent !!

The prawn noodle stall is located at the Shunfu Food Center.  There is no award, certificate or newspaper food reviews displaying at the stall.  However, I find that the prawn mee soup is very tasty and not oily.  There is another stall in the same food centre which I find it more oily.  The prawns are very fresh too.

Their dried version is very good too with very good mix of home-made chili and tomato sauce.  Try the mee kia with more brean sprouts.
