Sunday morning, went to Lor 8 Toa Payoh to have breakfast with my wife.  Walk a few rounds and uncertain which stall to try as not very familiar with this hawker centre.

IMG_6334

Saw a long queue at this stall at #01-40 and would trust the Toa Payoh residents’ taste will not be too bad to queue at this prawn noodles stall (most other stall are without queue).  No accreditation display on the stall – so I taught WOW ! finally I found a good prawn noodle stall that has not been picked up by the food critics.

WOW – see pei pai jiat ( taste real bad !).  No wonder there is no one write about this stall.  The noodle is soggy.  Chili is so bland and tasteless.  The worst is that the owner seems to love to see a long queue that he is trying so hard to slow down in prepping the food.  Sorry lah, Toa Payoh residents!  I really not sure why you guys want to queue up for this prawn noodle stall !  Speechless !

IMG_6337

The soup is pathetic.  One of the worst you can get !

IMG_6336

Moral of the story – queue not necessary good!

Tian Tian Fa Carrot Cake

The consolation is while waiting for the prawn noodle, getting a bit of impatient and ordered a carrot cake from the stall opposite (#01-42).  Not bad !  Crispy outside, the kway is quite soft.  Not too oily and not too salty.

Traditional Laksa selling at a very traditional old coffeeshop in a very traditional way – using charcoal.  If you are a Laksa fan, you should not miss this stall.

IMG_5583

The aunty keep adding the Lasksa gravy from another pot to this main pot cooked by charcoal .

IMG_5582

The ingredients are simple – fish cakes and cockles.  Only thick beehoon are being served and to eat with spoon only (no chopstick required).

IMG_5585

Still selling at $2 per bowl but most customers will order $3 as $2 no shiok – too little.

IMG_5584

(My order has no cockles – they give me more fishcake !!)

While waiting for your Laksa (normally long queue), you may order 2 side orders from the same coffee shop – Fried Carrot Cake and Poh Piah.  Both are quite good, especially the carrot cake is a pleasant surprise.  Crispy outside but the kuei is soft but not mushy.

The stalls are maned by 3 brothers, one cook in the morning shift and the other cook in the evening.  The 3rd brother made the carrot cake.  Made !!  Yes, unlike other stalls who claim that they made the carrot cakes by steaming the cake from the rice flour,  this stall actually mill the broken rice themselves to make carrot cake.

IMG_3003

The carrot cakes are soft but not mushy.  You can taste pinch of carrorts and radish but, frankly, it is not much difference from those made from rice flour.  However, the stall deserve the foodie support as they are the only stall that still made the ingredient from scratch and maintain the original and traditional way of making the carrort cake.  Somehow I prefer the carrot cake cooked by the brother in the evening shift.
