Penang Street Food Paradise – 槟城美食天堂

Just returned from Penang for food and wall arts hunt.  We stayed at 23 Love Lane ( a very nice boutique hotel converted from a conserved house) which is very near to Chulia Street.  If you are looking for local hawkers food, I suggest you find a hotel near Chulia Street, it is extremely convenience.

1) Kimberly Street Road Side Hawkers (Lebuh Kimberley)

The road side stalls open after 5.30 pm.  Recommended stalls:

The Yong Tau Foo stall is on a mobile bike.  The taufoo is very soft and smooth.

IMG_0784

Bit disappointed with the taste of the CKT as the owner has a good “performance” on his cooking of the CKT as the fire is so strong that you expect to have very good wok Haei but was very bland.

IMG_0770IMG_0781

This stall selling one of the best chicken feet that I ever have (top 3).  Best I had is in Macau.  The braised chicken is so so though – can skip.

IMG_0777IMG_0780

This is the most famous Duck Meat Kway chap among this road side stalls.  Unlike other food stalls, they owned (or rent) an entire coffee shop to serve the customers.  They used duck egg to cook the Lor egg.  Very nice!  But I find the smell of the duck meat overwhelmed the overall taste (could be I am not a duck eat guy !)

IMG_0766IMG_0786

This another nice staff – Cheng Tng.  The liow is pretty generous.  I ordered the cold version (due to the weather) I believe the hot version would be better.  The best is not the Cheng Tng but their home made almond tea.  Remember to add Gingko seed.  Die die must try!

IMG_0790IMG_0787

Other stalls that we have not tried including Lok Lok, Oyster Omelet, Lor Bah, Siew Mai dim Sum

IMG_0788IMG_0793

2) Kheng Pin Coffee shop (80 Jalan Penang (Junction at Jalan Sri Bahari)

Famous Lor bak (Goh Hiang) and Wonton Mee.

IMG_0702IMG_0708

IMG_0703IMG_0705

Found the noodles too soft and soggy and not QQ.

Also ordered the char Kway Tiow – which is very ordinary.

IMG_0707

Saw one mamak Indian man walking into the coffee shop with a basket so something….being a food detective, I rushed to him and order a….epok (curry puff) Rm1.50 /pc.  It is out of the world, best I have tasted for century.  Reminded me the epok I had outside old ACS primary school near the Registry of Marriage in 1969.

3)  Chew Clan Jetty

There are quite a few stalls selling loal food in the café outside the Chew clan Jetty – we did not try as it looks like catering for the tourists.  Interestingly, right inside the Jetty, found this Big Bowl Ramen.  Big bow! How big can it be?  Look at the bowl next to the man inside the restaurant.. OMG (watch the carbo, bro!)

4)  椰脚粿条汤 (183, Carvarnon Street – Near Komptar)

Recommended by my good friend also a foodie Alan, do some search on a blog and read the stall open from 8 am to 2 Pm…2 PM. !!!!  we reached the stall at 1.30 pm and they already look like below (#$%@&).  Check with the workers and they said they close at 12 pm (sometime 11 am all sold out).  Never open beyonf 12 pm.  Hope the blogger be more responsible in their article.  Sigh !  Next time lor.

The same blogger recommended a char kway tiow about 5 stalls from 椰脚粿条汤.  The shop closed too when we arrived.  It is called Tiger Char Kway Tiow at 179 Carvarnon Street.

5)    吕家打石街牛肉粿條汤饭 Lebuh Pantai和Lebuh Chulia的交际 处有间红白色的消防局,正对面就有间南亚茶室 (Lam Ah Kopitiam),

So we walked across the street of 椰脚粿条汤 to hunt for any good gem.  Getting bit hungry by then and saw a beef kway tiow stall and decided enough waiting and ordered each a beef kway tiow soup.  Wow.  wow.  Best surprise found of the day.  The soup is so tasty.

Also to try the very good oyster Omelet in the same coffee shop.  The coffee and tea is very good too.  I tried the ice Ying Yang (tea and coffee mixed).

6) The Legend Nonya House (2 Gat Lebuh Chulia – opposite Chew Clan Jetty)

Portion quite small so can order most dishes.  The asam fish, taufoo and egg plant is quite good.

7) Pasar Air Itam Asam Laksa (Jalan Pasar Road, 11500 Air Itam, (Beside the Air Itam Market)

One of the must try dish when you are visiting Kee Lek Si.  Walking distance from the temple (about 15 mins walk).

There are many stalls beside the laksa stall.

The curry noodle is nothing special.

8) Goh Huat Seng charcoal old school steamboat (59-A, Lebuh Kimberly – very near to the Kimberley duck mest Kway chap) open 6 pm to 10 pm

Very nostalgic feel like back to young day Chinese New Year reunion dinner where all sit around the table with the charcoal steamboat serving the delicious and fresh seafood, meat, fish balls and vegie.  The little fan is the new technology though (we used to used the paper made fan).

9) Chulia Street night food street (junction of Carvarnon Street and Chulia Street) after 5.30 pm

Most famous stall here is the curry noodles and the “mother and son wonton mee” which we have tried.  Its is out of this world!!!

10) Toh Soon Coffee  (184 Lebuh Campbell (before Penang Road) Near Hotel Continental)

This is like our old days Ah Kun kopi oh with peng kang roti.  same same.  Crowd also same same.  we decided to give it a miss because there are so many people in front of us in the queue (mainly Singaporeans sua ku).  So just bought 2 packets of nasi lemak to try.  The chili is very Indian curry spice base.  Not bad especially it only pack with small portion (and dnt need to queue).

11) Hon Kei Food Centre @ 45 Lorong Kampung Malabar (near Lebuh Cereia)

So instead of queuing unwisely for the kopi – O, we chose an air con café 5 metres away – serving extremely nice Ter Huang Kiam chye.  We ordered mee sua + having our tapoa nasi lemak.  May be it is too early for breakfast, the shop is rather empty.  Yummy.  Happy.

12) Penang Famous Teochew Chendul (27 & 29 Lebuh Keng Kwee)

Ok, after the Ter Huang Kiam Chye Mee Sua – we went for the 2 most famous chendul in Penang which is about 15 mins walk. They are just opposite each other in a small lane. We tried both stalls but prefer the one on the left hand side of the road (the one with lesser queue).  The longer queue stall, you can order and eat in the coffee shop – which also have few good stalls (char kay tiow, rojak etc).

Other stalls:

12) Egg Tarts and Yam bun

Next to the chendul stalls and on the main road (Penang Road) – try their egg tart and fried yam bun.

13) Tau Sa Piah ( Heem Hiang and Ngee Hiang)

Two very famous shops – one at Jalan Burma (HH) – quite far need to take cab.  NH is everywhere near chulia street (Beach street near little India).  NH sell  very good sesame oil.

14) Pickles and Tidbits

Head to Chowrasta Parsar = selling variety of pickles and tidbits.

15) Other stalls that walked pass that we have not tried (next time lah) – do your search to see if they are any good!

That’s all folks…its time to reduce weighs upon returning to Singapore.

Hong Kong style restaurant selling char xiew, roasted duck and dishes.  The shop is next to the famous (over rated) Casuarina roti prata.  Tried the beef noodles (牛腩面)。  Not bad – tender with decent good sauce.  Added the wonton – failed big time.  Awful !  Noodles also so so only.

Based on my collection and memory, this BCM stall is the 3rd meepok stall that has changed hand over the years.  The past owner of the meepok stall simply could not compete with the famous fishball meepok stall “Jin Ji” at the other side of the same hawker centre.  Always empty and no queue as compared to Jin Ji.  However, this BCM stall will give Jin Ji a good competition (though both are not really selling the same type of mee pok – fishball vs ba chor mee).  The uncle worked for the famous Michelin award Tai Hwa BCM when he was young.  No wonder the style and taste is very Tai Wah.  Powered by strong vinegar with nice mixed of chili (you can ask uncle to add more chili if you like is more spicy).

img_0232

Minimum $4 (Jin Ji is $3 – that’s why queue longer) but the ingredient given by uncle is generous – pork slice and minced meat (fresh), teochew dumplings, liver and meat ball.  The soup is pretty god too.

img_0234

Ordered separate teochew dumpling soup – nice !

img_0235

I came back for Uncle meepok three times within a week craving for the vinegar based very nice BCM.  Most importantly – queue is shorter than Jin Ji and obviously Tai Hwa.  Good deal !

The BCM (Ba Cho Mee) stall in is super popular in Toa Payoh.  It is super famous because of the super long queue – easily 30 – 45 minutes on the peak hours (especially weekends morning).  They have a queuing system like in the polyclinic or Singtel shop, you order, pay, given a number and wait for your number to be displayed on the number board.  I went there three times on the weekends and each time looking at the queue I gave it a miss.  This time, I eng eng on the weekday and, yes, there are only 2 order in front of me, happy 🙂

img_0300

But the food did not make me happy 😦  First of all I ordered Meepok and they gave me Mee Gia 😦 And I expect BCM to come with stronger favour in terms of vinegar and chili and good portion of fresh and crispy Pork Lard.  Lai Heng lacks these 3 important ingredients.  The soup is very bland too.  The pork slice /minced meats and mushroom are generous and good though,  So, I certainly will not come back if I need to queue for more than 10 minutes.

img_0301

img_0302

While patiently waiting for your number to be called (like waiting for I.phone 7 at SingTel Shop), order some Ang Ku Kway in the same Coffee Shop.  Though it is not as good as the one at Everton Road, at least you get something to munch while waiting long long for the meepok da.

This wonton mee stall always form a long queue at Teck Ghee hawker centre (ang mo kio ave 10).  Normally, I will patronize either the mee pok stall or the mee rembus stall at this HC but was curious why there is always a long queue at this wonton mee stall which is consuming and unheard of.    It is my interest to discover gem where most other popular food blogger has not found yet.  Wow, the noodle is surprisingly good !  Springy texture and well cook.  The noodles they order is of good quality (more eggs) that make the noodles with very good texture.  Credit goes to the uncle who put his heart and soul to cook a good wonton noodles (these days hard to find good one).  The ingredient (char siew, wonton) and the soup are ok, fine only.  Queue is long but moving quite fast.  Aunty collecting the orders is very friendly despite the long queue.

Needless to go into details or introduction, the most famous mee pok in Singapore (or may be the world) – one of the two Michelin Star hawker food stalls.  Though the Hong Lim stall is not awarded (Crawford Lane is), but the standard of the 2 stalls remain the same.  Different is you only need to queue for 15 – 20 minutes here.  That morning I went there and see a very short queue and was so happy yhat I could get it soon.  Jesus, the uncle took his time to toss the noodles to the perfection and still make me wait for 20 minutes.  Yes, perfection !  The mee pok is so well cooked that they really deserved to be number 1 in Singapore.  The ingredients are fresh and generous, especially the ti pok is so well fried.  This is the prefect combination – noodles, chili, ingredients, soup – yes Perfection.

Yong Kee Famous Fishball Noodles (荣记驰名鱼圆面)

img_9720

One of my famous upper place during university time.  They used to open till like 4 am.  Since renovation, they have stopped at 1 am.

The fishball and meat balls are home made (not factory supply) and are very bouncy and tasty.  Good!

The mee pok is well cooked and springy, coated with adequate lards.  Good !

Chili – AH, big let down.  No taste, no punch, not hot, not spicy.  What a waste.  They seem have  ot improved this area since 80s.  That is why in the past I normally patronized the other mee pok stall (which since moved to old airport road HC after ABC went through major reno but subsequently disappeared) – which always had better business than Yong Kee then.  Of course now that the rival stall (cant remember the name) and Yong Kee is the king of mee pok at ABC market!  Pls improve your chili, Ah Yong !!!!

img_9721

One of the famous chr siew stall in Singapore.  The Char Siew is well camerlised with a bit of chow ta on the char siew which is nice.  The pork part they use is quite fatty and it is bit more oily to my liking.  I prefer the one at Kong Siang street than here.

img_9727

The Xio Bak is not as good as the one opposite Serangoon Stadium which is the best xio bak in Singapore.  There are too much fat in the pork belly.

Newton Song Kee Teochew Fish Porridge (纽頓松记魚粥)

img_9406

Very cheng cheng (clear soup) and not adding MSG (if any will not be a lot) as after eating the porridge – you do not feel very thirsty.  The batang fish is very fresh.  The only regret is the tipo (deep fried sole fish) is not given enough and making the porridge a bit bland.  I like to have more condiment (fried garlic / tipo etc) to be added to have more shiok taste.  But if like to have real cheng cheng porridge, this stall is good.  $5 / $8.  The fishes are not very generous – probably the rental is killing them (which I can understand).

Eng Huat Fishball Mee (永發魚圆面)

Eng Huat Fishball Mee (永發魚圆面)

Yes Meepok again!  I am a mee pok man.  Cannot resist on mee pok.  This stall was formerly from the old Zion hawker centre (next to the point block) and has now moved to this L shaped Havelock hawker centre (very old hawker centre).  You will find so many good food in this hawker centre (Char Siew rice, Laksa, Prawn Mee, Curry Rice, Turtle Soup, Balanchan Fish, FIsh Soup, DU DU Kway etc etc).

img_9429

The old aunty is still manning the stall with his sons.  The uniqueness of this stall is their handmade fishball and the fishcake ($2 per piece).  They are really fresh and very nice as compared to some stall that get from the factory.  Be there early as normally before 12 30 – they have sold out.  But if you are eating other food – do remember to buy from them the fried fish cake !

img_9430

Unfortunately – the noodle is not very well cook.  Though it is not those that left with lots of water ( I hate those cooking style), the noodles are not QQ enough.  The worst part is their chili.  Understand they use very bland technique – without adding any balanchan or dried shrimp etc.  It makes the chili very very bland.
